DOJ has charged three people in the 2020 killing of Zachariah Shorty on the Navajo Nation amid an FBI surge into Indian Country. Officials said this year’s Operation Not Forgotten — the longest and most intense FBI deployment to date, with teams from Albuquerque, Phoenix, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Detroit, Minneapolis and Jackson, Miss. — comes as the FBI’s Indian Country caseload stood at about 4,300 open investigations at the start of FY2025 (including 900+ deaths, 1,000 child abuse and 500 domestic violence/adult sexual abuse cases); Attorney General Pamela Bondi pledged continued pursuit of justice and FBI Director Kash Patel called the surge a "major step forward."
