The Department of Homeland Security, via Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin, publicly rejected an assertion from Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats that 30 immigrants have died in ICE custody since President Trump took office and that 2025 is the deadliest year in ICE detention since the early 2000s. In a Saturday post on X, McLaughlin accused Democrats of 'trying to twist data to smear ICE law enforcement,' said there has been 'NO spike in deaths' with a detention death rate of 0.00007%, and argued that ICE facilities provide a higher medical standard of care than most U.S. prisons, framing the critique against ICE as political even as DHS highlights recent arrests of serious criminal noncitizens.
