Analilia Mejía, a progressive backed by Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and AOC, won the crowded NJ‑11 Democratic special primary after a tight count and Tom Malinowski’s concession and will face Republican Joe Hathaway in the April 16 special general election. Mejía defended her call to “abolish ICE,” saying “you can’t reform it,” tied the position to voter outrage over the Minnesota ICE and Border Patrol killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and likened those deaths and modern immigration enforcement to 1960s segregationist brutality such as the Birmingham children’s crusade.
