Major U.S. studios and unions are moving against ByteDance’s new Seedance 2.0 AI video model after it generated a hyper‑realistic clip of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt fighting, intensifying a collision between Hollywood and rapidly advancing Chinese AI. Netflix, Paramount, Warner Bros. and Disney have sent cease‑and‑desist letters accusing Seedance of infringing copyrights and misusing likenesses, while SAG‑AFTRA and the Motion Picture Association are backing the challenge. ByteDance says it respects intellectual property and is adding safeguards, but there is no clarity yet on whether those changes will meaningfully curb the tool’s capabilities or distribution. Industry executives warn that Chinese models, which now account for roughly one‑third of global AI use and often come with lighter IP guardrails, undercut U.S. rivals on price and speed and could leave Beijing effectively setting de facto global standards for how AI treats copyrighted works and human likenesses. For a U.S. film business already rattled by deepfakes and strike‑era fights over AI, this clash highlights both legal exposure and the strategic risk of ceding AI leadership in a sector that underpins American culture exports.
