Hawley Opens Google Probe After Senate Hearing on Online Child Sex Abuse
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, has launched a formal investigation into Google following a Tuesday hearing on child sex trafficking and online child sexual abuse material (CSAM). In a Wednesday letter to CEO Sundar Pichai, Hawley cites testimony that law-enforcement databases now contain more than 100 million suspected CSAM images and videos from 2023 alone, with at least 89,000 depicted children still unidentified, and alleges Google has failed to take “robust action” to help survivors. He is demanding internal policies from Google, YouTube and other Alphabet units on how they detect, review, remove and report CSAM, along with all CyberTipline reports filed with NCMEC since 2020, correspondence from victims seeking takedowns, and examples where Google did not remove reported material within 48 hours. The letter highlights testimony from a mother who said that, more than 25 years after her infant daughter was abused, images remain online and Google told her to contact individual webmasters, underscoring systemic obstacles victims face. Hawley also requests documentation of Google’s cooperation with federal, state and foreign law-enforcement investigations involving CSAM on its platforms, signaling potential follow‑up legislation or additional oversight if the company’s responses are deemed inadequate.
