A Gwinnett County, Georgia police officer was killed and another critically wounded early Sunday in a gunfight at a hotel near Stone Mountain after they responded to a fraud call, authorities said. According to a department statement, the two officers encountered a person at the suburban Atlanta hotel who pulled a gun and opened fire, hitting both officers before being shot by return fire. One officer died at the scene and the second was hospitalized in critical but stable condition; the suspect, also wounded, is being treated under guard. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp called the shooting a stark reminder of the daily dangers facing law enforcement and said he was mourning the fallen officer while praying for the second’s recovery. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the probe, as is standard in police‑involved shootings, and had not yet released the identities of the officers or the suspect as of Sunday afternoon.
