House conservatives are pressing Speaker Mike Johnson to force a showdown with Senate Republicans—urging him to “go to war,” block Senate bills or use procedural pressure to compel the Senate to take up the Trump‑backed SAVE America Act, even as Johnson says he is privately pressing Senate GOP Leader John Thune but is reluctant to publicly split with the Senate. The SAVE bill would impose nationwide proof‑of‑citizenship and photo‑ID requirements (specifying passports, birth certificates, certain military IDs and enhanced licenses), mandate ID for absentee ballots, create federal data‑matching and criminal penalties for election officials, and has prompted sharp partisan backlash—Republicans arguing it protects integrity and Democrats, voting‑rights groups and some GOP senators warning it federalizes elections and could disproportionately burden eligible voters.
