FDA Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods Kyle Diamantas said in a Fox News interview that the Trump administration will issue new federal dietary guidelines in early January as the first step in a sweeping 2026 food-policy overhaul aimed at obesity, diabetes and what officials call a national nutrition crisis. Diamantas said the updated guidelines will deemphasize ultra‑processed, sugar‑loaded foods in federal programs such as school lunches, WIC and SNAP, and that FDA plans to crack down on petroleum‑based food dyes and tighten the "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) process so companies cannot simply self‑certify ingredient safety.
