Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Jaime Moore told the Fire Commission that multiple drafts of the Palisades after‑action report were edited before his tenure to soften criticism of department leadership, acknowledged that the linked Jan. 1 Lachman fire was not properly mopped up (with smoldering stumps later helping ignite the Palisades blaze), and pledged reforms including tighter mop‑up procedures and drone‑based heat detection. The admissions come amid the broader fallout from the Jan. 6 Palisades and Eaton fires — which burned roughly 59 square miles, killed 31 people and destroyed more than 16,000 structures — leaving survivors facing persistent toxic contamination (including hazardous asbestos and lead), slow rebuilding and widespread insurance and housing gaps.
