President Trump signed an executive order directing the Pentagon to buy electricity from coal‑fired power plants and negotiate long‑term power‑purchase agreements, while the Department of Energy announced $175 million to extend the life of coal plants in West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina and Kentucky. The DOE also issued a 90‑day emergency order blocking the planned Dec. 31, 2025 retirement of Craig Station Unit 1 in Colorado — a move being challenged by the plant owners, Colorado’s attorney general and environmental groups who say the order unlawfully commandeers local utility decisions and will prop up costly, high‑CO2 generation despite replacement renewables.
