The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced on March 19 that Planned Parenthood of Illinois violated Title VII by segregating employees into mandatory race-based 'affinity caucuses,' subjecting White staff to racially harassing DEI trainings, and giving Black employees time off that was denied to White coworkers. The EEOC found that White employees were barred from certain meetings, were required to attend training sessions that included derogatory statements about White people and 'white supremacy,' and were overseen by at least one manager whose conduct was deemed racially harassing. Under a class-wide resolution, Planned Parenthood of Illinois must pay $500,000 and has already dismissed a manager whose behavior surfaced during the investigation. EEOC Chair Andrea Lucas stressed that 'there is no DEI exception to Title VII' and that civil-rights protections apply equally to White workers. The case is feeding a wider online backlash and debate over whether some corporate and nonprofit DEI programs are crossing the line into unlawful race discrimination, and it puts other employers on notice that race-segregated trainings and affinity groups can trigger federal enforcement.
