The Justice Department, through Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, has demanded unredacted digital records from Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon covering same‑day registrations and votes in the March 2024 primary and November 2024 general election to investigate use of "vouching" and other same‑day procedures for compliance with the Help America Vote Act. Minnesota law allows one registered voter to vouch for up to eight same‑day registrants (but not if they were themselves vouched for), and the probe comes amid heightened scrutiny tied to a state welfare fraud scandal and a "Driver’s Licenses for All" policy.
