Emails obtained by the New York Post and described by Fox News show that in February 2024, after Kyrsten Sinema left the Democratic Party, DOJ’s Criminal Division, prosecutors in then‑D.C. U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves’ office and FBI Washington Field Office agents discussed opening a criminal investigation into the Arizona senator over alleged Federal Election Campaign Act violations tied to nearly $800,000 in campaign spending on hotels, a car and concert tickets and more than $265,000 on security. Then‑Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Aloi and then‑FBI Special Agent Walter Giardina reportedly expressed interest in pursuing the case after Graves flagged a media report, but prosecutors ultimately declined to open a probe, and Sinema’s chief of staff now calls the episode a politically motivated abuse of power for her opposition to Biden and Senate Democrats on the filibuster.
