A new MCCA survey and Real Time Crime Index data show a sharp national decline in violent crime for Jan–Sept 2025 versus 2024 — homicides fell from 5,126 to 4,143, rapes from 21,728 to 20,407, robberies from 81,860 to 66,501, and aggravated assaults from 216,466 to 194,804. Experts attribute much of the drop to a post‑pandemic rebound in services and normal activity — trends reflected in steep declines in cities like Detroit — but the preliminary, voluntary MCCA reporting also flags several major jurisdictions that bucked the trend, including Omaha, Atlanta, Columbus, Los Angeles County, Tampa, Suffolk County (NY), Wichita, Pittsburgh, Denver and Philadelphia.
