Prosecutors in King County, Washington, have charged Elisio Melendez with attempted second-degree murder after surveillance video allegedly showed him twice trying to push a stranger into the path of an arriving train at Seattle’s Northgate light rail station. Authorities say Melendez "carefully timed" the attack, approaching the victim from behind as a northbound train entered the station; the victim caught himself at the platform edge and avoided falling, then allegedly faced a second shove attempt before the suspect fled. Deputies used station video and follow-up detective work to locate Melendez at a nearby mental health community facility where he lived, recovering clothing that matched what the assailant wore before booking him into the King County jail on $750,000 bail. Court records show Melendez has a prior 2019 domestic-violence assault case in which he was found incompetent to stand trial and "not restorable," leading to dismissal and civil commitment at Western State Hospital until his release to a less-restrictive setting in January 2022.
