The U.S. State Department on Dec. 16, 2025 designated Colombia’s Clan del Golfo (Gaitanist Self‑Defense Forces of Colombia) as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, citing cocaine‑funded violence and attacks on officials and civilians. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the move targets the group’s financing and resources as Washington intensifies counter‑narcotics and security efforts along the Colombia–Venezuela border.
