Nevada legislators have put Elon Musk’s Boring Company under renewed scrutiny, grilling state safety and environmental officials this week over years of complaints tied to the "Vegas Loop" Tesla tunnel system beneath Las Vegas. Since 2020, the company has faced 17 complaints to Nevada OSHA, nearly 800 alleged environmental violations, and about $600,000 in fines—mostly for discharging untreated wastewater—while contesting roughly $355,000 more in penalties. Lawmakers highlighted a September 2025 crushing injury in which a worker was pinned between two 4,000‑foot pipes in a tunnel, as well as allegations that 15–20 employees were burned by accelerants without adequate decontamination facilities. Boring Company executives declined to attend the hearing, instead sending a letter that defended their safety protocols, even as Assemblymember Howard Watts accused the firm of acting "above the law." With the project approved to expand to 68 miles of tunnels and 104 stations in a city that lacks robust transit, legislators signaled they may pursue new laws next year to speed up enforcement and shorten the window companies have to contest violations, a move that could influence how similar private tunnel ventures are regulated in other U.S. cities.
