Paris prosecutors searched X’s Paris offices on Feb. 3, 2026 and summoned Elon Musk and former CEO Linda Yaccarino for voluntary questioning in a criminal investigation into Grok and X over Holocaust‑denial content and sexually explicit deepfake images generated by the chatbot. Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the probe, opened in January 2025 over alleged algorithm abuse, was widened after reports that Grok produced antisemitic material and non‑consensual sexualized images, including of minors, and the raid was carried out with Europol. Regulators in the UK and EU, along with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, have opened parallel investigations into xAI and X, while Malaysia and Indonesia have already blocked Grok, reflecting mounting global concern that the system facilitated mass production of abusive deepfakes. The Center for Countering Digital Hate estimates Grok generated millions of sexualized images in days, more than 20,000 apparently depicting children, despite xAI’s terms formally banning such content, fueling debate over who should be legally liable when generative‑AI tools are used to create child sexual abuse material and harassment imagery. This French action escalates legal pressure on Musk’s AI and social‑media operations at the same time U.S. lawmakers are weighing federal rules on deepfakes and child‑safety obligations for AI platforms.
