Campus Antisemitism and Protest

The Justice Department has sued UCLA, alleging the university failed to protect Jewish employees from antisemitic harassment after October 2023, claiming incidents included exclusion of Jews from portions of the main quad and swastikas graffitied on buildings during 2024 encampments. DOJ also alleges the school failed to investigate complaints and retaliated against faculty who spoke out (including Professors Ian Holloway and Kamran Shamsa), while UCLA points to a new Initiative to Combat Antisemitism, the hiring of a dedicated Title VI/Title VII officer, and says it will vigorously defend itself; the suit follows a prior $6 million settlement over a “Jew Exclusion Zone” encampment.
