California health officials report 35 cases of wild mushroom poisoning between Nov. 18 and Jan. 4, resulting in three deaths and three liver transplants in an unusually active season driven by abundant death cap mushrooms in Northern California. Sonoma County, which confirmed a resident’s death last weekend, and the California Department of Public Health are warning residents not to eat foraged mushrooms, noting that early rains and mild fall weather have boosted growth and that symptoms can initially subside before liver failure develops.
