ICE Blames California Sanctuary Rules After Arresting 9 Convicted Sex Offenders in Los Angeles
Immigration and Customs Enforcement says it arrested nine previously convicted sex offenders in a targeted operation in Los Angeles and is publicly blaming California’s sanctuary policies for allowing such offenders back onto the streets instead of into federal custody. In a statement released Wednesday, ICE Director Todd M. Lyons said the nine – whose prior convictions include rape, lewd acts and continuous sexual abuse of children under 14, and sentences of up to 18 years – were taken into custody after local jails either released them before a detainer could be filed or declined to honor ICE holds. The agency claims that since Jan. 20, 2025, California has refused to honor 4,561 immigration detainers for 'criminal illegal immigrants' and that it now has more than 33,000 active detainers lodged in the state’s local, state and federal facilities. ICE highlighted individual cases, such as a man sentenced to two years for sexual intercourse with a child who was released before a detainer could be lodged, and others convicted of child rape or long‑term abuse who were freed despite ICE requests. The operation and data are being used by the Trump administration to argue that state sanctuary limits on cooperation are endangering public safety, while California officials have long maintained such policies are designed to protect community trust and civil rights. The clash feeds directly into a broader national fight over how far localities can go in resisting federal immigration enforcement when serious criminal convictions are involved.
