A ransomware attack on U.S. fintech and marketing provider Marquis Marketing Services, which works with more than 700 banks and credit unions nationwide, exploited an unpatched SonicWall firewall vulnerability starting Aug. 14 and has exposed sensitive personal and financial data for at least 400,000 customers across several states, including more than 354,000 in Texas. Legally required breach notices in Texas, Maine, Iowa, Massachusetts and New Hampshire say hackers accessed names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers and bank, debit and credit card numbers, with Marquis confirming the incident, engaging outside cybersecurity experts, notifying law enforcement and affected individuals, and stating it has seen no evidence of resulting identity theft or fraud so far.
