The Transportation Security Administration proposed a rule, published Thursday in the Federal Register, to charge travelers $18 at airport checkpoints if they lack a Real ID or other approved identification, covering costs of a new biometric alternative identity‑verification program. The fee would begin once TSA opens program registration at TSA.gov; TSA says Real ID enforcement began in May 2025 and the biometric process will streamline screening for those without compliant IDs.
