DC Museum Ambush of Israeli Staffers Draws Federal Terrorism Charges
Federal prosecutors have filed a 13-count superseding indictment against Elias Rodriguez, a 31-year-old Chicago man accused of ambushing four Israeli Embassy staffers outside Washington, D.C.’s Capital Jewish Museum on May 21, 2025, killing two and wounding two others. The new indictment adds four counts of acts of terrorism while armed, along with additional first-degree murder and assault-with-intent-to-kill charges, building on earlier counts including murder of a foreign official and hate crimes resulting in death. Prosecutors allege Rodriguez fired roughly 20 rounds from a semi-automatic handgun while shouting 'Free Palestine,' then went into the occupied museum, donned a red keffiyeh, and declared, 'I did it for Palestine. I did it for Gaza,' before berating remaining attendees as 'Zio-nazi terror.' FBI officials say he also wrote a manifesto attempting to justify the attack and inspire further political violence, and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro is publicly calling it a 'horrific and targeted act of terror' against the Jewish community and Israeli diplomats. Several of the terrorism and murder counts carry a maximum penalty of death and mandatory life sentences if he is convicted, making this one of the most serious domestic embassy-related terror cases in recent years and feeding into wider fears, already flaring online, about escalating antisemitic violence in the U.S.
