Israeli authorities identified the fallen paratrooper as Sgt. Moshe Yitzchak Hacohen Katz, originally from New Haven, Connecticut; a relative, Rabbi Yehoshua Hecht, described him as religious and academically strong who “enjoyed every moment of life.” The Israeli military said Katz was killed in combat in southern Lebanon as Israel expanded its invasion, with three other soldiers wounded, bringing the southern Lebanon death toll to five Israeli soldiers since fighting with Hezbollah reignited after rocket fire on March 2.
