Rand Paul Says Trust in Trump Administration 'Without Question' Broken Over Alex Pretti Shooting Response
In a CBS '60 Minutes' interview about the fatal Border Patrol shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Sen. Rand Paul, R‑Ky., said 'without question' that trust in the Trump administration has been broken by its response, blasting DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino for early statements portraying Pretti as a domestic terrorist or seeking 'maximum damage' that he said are flatly contradicted by video. Paul called their comments 'terrible judgment' and warned that when there is video, officials 'can lie to your heart's content if there's no video. But the video doesn't support what they're saying.' He added that he does not trust the FBI alone to investigate and argued an independent body outside the federal government 'would be better,' even as he also criticized Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s refusal to cooperate with federal authorities and condemned protesters spitting on ICE agents. The White House pointed Fox News back to Trump’s prior statement that he wants an 'honorable and honest investigation' and will be 'watching over it,' while Paul noted he has summoned the heads of ICE, CBP and USCIS to testify before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee later this month about immigration enforcement and the Pretti case. Paul’s comments, coming from a Republican senator who has often aligned with Trump on other issues, underscore a widening credibility gap inside the GOP over the administration’s narratives around Operation Metro Surge and the Minneapolis shootings.
