At a March 4 White House event, President Trump and executives from Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, OpenAI and Amazon signed a voluntary "ratepayer protection" pledge in which the companies agreed to negotiate separate utility rates, pay for power and necessary grid upgrades (including capacity they may not ultimately use), and not pass those costs onto local households while hiring and training workers in hosting communities as AI data‑center demand grows. Energy analysts and advocates warned the pledge is largely non‑binding and largely formalizes steps many firms already take, arguing the 6.3% year‑over‑year rise in residential electricity prices and long‑term affordability will require regulatory, market and permitting reforms rather than voluntary promises.
