Discord Delays Global Age‑Verification Plan After Privacy Backlash
Discord has postponed its planned global age‑verification rollout to the second half of 2026 after sharp user backlash over a March policy that would have required face scans or government‑ID uploads for some accounts. In a Tuesday blog post, CTO and co‑founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy admitted the company “missed the mark,” acknowledged widespread distrust of tech firms’ data collection, and said Discord will revise the policy before expanding beyond current, legally required checks. The platform, which has more than 200 million active users, faced intense criticism after users cited a recent breach at a third‑party vendor that exposed ID images for up to 70,000 Discord users, and questioned plans to use outside identity‑verification firms such as Persona. Vishnevskiy said Discord no longer works with the breached vendor, emphasized that any facial age estimation must run entirely on‑device so biometric data never leaves a user’s phone, and promised vendors will be bound by strict data‑use, retention and deletion rules. The company says that for more than 90% of users nothing will change because it can infer age from account‑level signals, but the fight underscores a broader tension between lawmakers’ pressure for tighter online age checks and users’ fears that age‑gating will become a pretext for intrusive biometric data harvesting.
