One Killed, Two Injured In Helicopter Crash Off Miami Coast

One person was killed and two others were injured late Wednesday morning when a small helicopter crashed into Biscayne Bay near Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park off Key Biscayne, just southeast of Miami.[1]

The Robinson R44 helicopter went down around 11:15 a.m. local time, prompting a rapid response from local marine units and rescue crews, who pulled the survivors from the water and took them to a nearby hospital while the third occupant was pronounced dead.[1] Authorities did not immediately release the names of the victims or details on their conditions, and there was no early word on a possible cause.[1]

Federal and local agencies quickly moved to secure the crash site in the busy waters off Key Biscayne, a popular area for recreational boating and sightseeing flights. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board both opened investigations, while the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office launched its own inquiry and worked to document debris and witness accounts.[1] Investigators are expected to examine maintenance records, pilot history, weather conditions and any available flight-tracking or onboard data as they try to determine what brought down the four-seat helicopter.

The Robinson R44, a widely used light helicopter often flown for training, tourism and private trips, has been involved in a number of high-profile accidents over the years, and safety regulators typically scrutinize such crashes for any sign of recurring mechanical issues or maintenance lapses. In Miami and other coastal cities, low-altitude sightseeing and charter flights are a familiar part of the skyline, and officials said they were focused for now on reconstructing Wednesday's flight path and interviewing witnesses and the surviving occupants to understand how a routine trip ended in a deadly plunge into Biscayne Bay.[1]
