911 Call Released From Oregon Father Who Killed School Shooter

Authorities in Bend, Oregon, on Tuesday released a tense 911 recording capturing the moment a father told a dispatcher he was about to confront and kill the teenage gunman who had opened fire at his daughters' elementary school last month.[1]

The roughly 75-second clip from 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco's call, made public by Deschutes County officials, includes him urgently reporting the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School and saying he was going into the building with his handgun, despite the dispatcher telling him not to act.[1] In a separate release of 79 seconds of audio, Giamanco is heard saying, "I'm about to go kill this kid. He's in the school!" as the dispatcher pleads with him not to "do anything."[2]

On October 15, a 16-year-old former student, identified by police as Griffin J. John II, opened fire with a pump-action shotgun at Silver Rail Elementary, killing three children and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert and wounding a 7-year-old girl and 54-year-old educational assistant Rebecca Drury.[3] The victims were children ages 5, 8 and 11, and authorities say John's mother had purchased the shotgun around his August birthday; investigators believe he fired up to 15 rounds.[3] According to a police timeline, the first 911 call came at 12:59 p.m. from a pickup driver the shooter allegedly fired at, the school went into lockdown at 1:01 p.m., and officers arrived one minute later.[3]

Giamanco, whose two daughters were inside the school but were not hurt, called 911 from outside, then retrieved a legally owned .40-caliber pistol that had been secured in his vehicle and went into the building, where he fatally shot the attacker.[3] Bend police later said the shooting "had unfolded" by the time he engaged the gunman, noting that a teacher had already thrown her phone at John and tackled him in a desperate effort to stop the attack.[3] District officials said John had previously attended Silver Rail as a special-needs student, adding to the shock in the community as more details, including Tuesday's audio, continue to emerge.[3]
