Binance Probes Suspected Hack, Freezes Activity On $6.3 Billion In Assets

Binance disclosed late Thursday, October 29, 2026, that a "potential security issue" has affected about $6.3 billion of assets and it temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while investigating.[1]

The company said roughly $3 billion of those assets have been frozen on-chain with partners, and stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle have independently frozen more than $2.3 billion tied to the incident.[1] Binance's initial investigation blames a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop that allegedly let an attacker submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.[1] Investigators added they have found no evidence of leaked wallet private keys so far, and the firm said it is coordinating with law enforcement.[1]

The announcement sent bitcoin down about 3.2 percent Thursday evening to below $79,000 as markets absorbed the news.[1] Binance said its security teams remain on the case and that it will update users and regulators as the probe develops.[1]
