Ellison leads multistate brief to preserve Somali TPS

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison led 18 state attorneys general in filing an amicus brief on Oct. 26 to preserve Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals.[1]

The brief was filed in African Communities Together v. Mullin and asks the court to block the Department of Homeland Security's termination of Somali TPS.[1] The coalition says ending TPS would harm state economies, public health systems and families, particularly in Minnesota's Twin Cities.[1]

On Aug. 14, DHS ended the TPS designation for Somali nationals after a June Supreme Court ruling, a change the brief now asks judges to undo or pause.[1] The attorneys general note the move affects about 53,000 Somali immigrants in the United States and roughly 37,500 in Minnesota.[1]

Ellison's filing joins a larger legal fight over the Trump administration's decision to terminate protections and sets up more courtroom disputes over deportation risk and state-level impacts as litigation continues.[1]
