UN Report Flags Sharp Rise In U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions

An annual U.N. emissions report released in October 2026 found that U.S. greenhouse gas emissions rose dramatically last year while global emissions were flat, marking the United States as a major outlier.[1]

The report says the U.S. was the only major economy with a dramatic rise and is now tied with Russia for the highest per-capita emissions among G20 countries.[1] It attributes the increase to higher electricity demand and to Trump administration measures that extend coal-plant operations, roll back vehicle fuel-economy standards, and phase out tax credits for solar and wind.[1]

The Trump administration withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement and is moving to exit all U.N. climate work.[1] The report notes the Environmental Protection Agency has said greenhouse gases are not a threat to human health and welfare.[1]

The U.S. government included a statement in the U.N. report saying it does not endorse or agree with the report's analysis or conclusions, and it provided no comments.[1]
