Abbas Delays Palestinian Legislative And Presidential Elections To September 2027

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas signed a decree on Friday, October 9, 2026, postponing legislative and presidential elections until September 11, 2027, saying voting conditions are not suitable.[1]

The PLO Executive Committee said voting conditions in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza were not suitable and said Israel has not allowed election materials or observers into Gaza.[1] Factions including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and a bloc led by former Fatah security chief Mohammed Dahlan had been discussing an alliance to run against Abbas before the postponement.[1]

Palestinians have not held legislative elections since 2006, when Hamas won a majority and later seized control of Gaza.[1] The presidential vote has not been held in more than two decades, and the decree postpones an effort to revive long-stalled Palestinian national elections.[1]
