Courier charged in $91K Chanhassen gold scam
A 24-year-old courier was charged Oct. 5 after being arrested at a controlled pickup in Chanhassen on Oct. 2 while attempting to collect $91,825 that a victim had tried to convert into gold.[1]
Deputies staged the controlled pickup at Fido's Pantry, and the man, identified as Kai Chun Hu, arrived and used a prearranged passcode before he was arrested, the complaint says.[1] He has been charged with aiding and abetting theft by swindle, the Carver County complaint says.[1] Hu told investigators he flew from Taiwan through Atlanta after a friend contacted him on Telegram and paid his flight.[1] He said the friend told him to pick up an item and later deleted the messages.[1]
On Sept. 28 the victim began receiving fake Microsoft alerts and calls from people posing as an FTC official who told her $300,000 was tied to child porn, firearms and sex trafficking, the complaint says.[1] She attempted to convert $91,825 into gold at two locations before realizing it was a scam and contacting the Carver County Sheriff's Office.[1]
