Man charged in fatal rampage at Minneapolis mental health home
Derek Duane Faulkner, 31, was charged Wednesday after a Sept. 28 early-morning attack at a Minneapolis residential mental health facility that killed one resident and injured four others.[1]
Faulkner faces one count of intentional second-degree murder and four counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, prosecutors said.[1] Officers responded to multiple 911 calls at about 6:36 a.m., police said.[1] Police found a male resident in his bedroom with severe blunt-force and chemical injuries; he died shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC).[1]
Charges say Faulkner used a firewood log, a lamp post, a fork and a fire extinguisher during the assaults.[1] He was already facing attempted second-degree murder and assault charges over an Aug. 25 rifle attack on a coworker in Zimmerman.[1] Court records show he posted a $500,000 noncash bond on Aug. 28 in those earlier cases.[1]
The charges were filed Wednesday as investigators and prosecutors continue to review the case.[1]
