State report shows 2025 murders, violent crime fell sharply

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension reported that murders fell to 132 in 2025 and the statewide violent crime rate dropped to 225.3 per 100,000 residents.[1]

The 132 homicides were down from 172 in 2024, the fewest since 2019, and the report showed a 78% clearance rate.[1] Carjackings fell to 294 from 426, with 215 in Minneapolis and 24 in St. Paul, and robberies declined more than 25%.[1]

The BCA logged 2,188 rape offenses involving 2,182 victims in 2025, with only 563 cases cleared and most victims reporting they knew the attacker.[1] Juveniles made up 8.3% of all arrests but roughly 30% of robbery arrests and 26.7% of motor vehicle theft arrests.[1]

Scholars note that changes in violent crime often follow concentrated poverty, neighborhood conditions and short-term shocks such as the pandemic, rather than a single explanation. Public safety planners will likely weigh those structural drivers as they respond to a year of sharp declines that nonetheless leaves gaps in solving sexual assaults and curbing youth-involved property crime.
