Congo's Fastest-Growing Ebola Outbreak Reaches Seventh Province

Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak has reached its seventh province after national lab tests confirmed the Bundibugyo Ebola virus in Sud-Ubangi, officials said.[1]

Sud-Ubangi's governor said the positive sample came from the Bulu health district.[1] Former health minister Jean-Jacques Mbungani said a 23-year-old man who traveled from South Kivu through Rwanda, Uganda, Ituri, Tshopo and Mongala died in Sud-Ubangi on Tuesday and later tested positive.[1]

As of Wednesday, September 9, Congo had reported 6,942 Ebola cases and 3,349 deaths across seven provinces, and the World Health Organization said the outbreak remains out of control. Sud-Ubangi is the first affected province in western Congo and sits on borders with the Central African Republic and Congo-Brazzaville, raising fears of cross-border spread.

Clinical trials of candidate vaccines against the Bundibugyo strain have begun in Tshopo, Haut-Uele and Bas-Uele, with vaccinations in Ituri set to start next week. The province jump and the recent patient's long travel route complicate containment and heighten the risk of regional transmission.
