MPCA fines Schwing Bioset for unpermitted emissions, waste mishandling

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an $18,939 civil penalty to Schwing Bioset for operating without required air and stormwater permits at its North Branch facility.[1]

Inspectors discovered an unpermitted paint booth at the plant during an October 30, 2024 inspection.[1] The MPCA said the facility had lacked an air emissions permit and an industrial stormwater permit since August 2021.[1]

From August 2021 through November 2024, the company improperly discarded an estimated 8,112 pounds of hazardous paint booth filters with regular solid waste, the agency said.[1] Those disposals were cited as hazardous waste violations that helped trigger the civil penalty.[1]

The penalty covers both the air-permit lapses and the hazardous waste handling failures identified in the MPCA's review.[1]
