Hiawatha Avenue to go single-lane for safety work Sept. 8
Lanes on Hiawatha Avenue (Highway 55) will be reduced to one lane each way between Minnehaha Parkway and East 44th Street starting Sept. 8 as crews begin safety upgrades that will run into mid-December.[1]
The project will add new pedestrian signals, marked crosswalks, refuge areas and rebuilt turn lanes, plus a median fence between East 45th and East 46th to curb unsafe crossings.[1] Mid-September through November, East 46th Street between Hiawatha and 36th Avenue South and the northbound right-turn lane from Hiawatha to 46th will be closed.[1] Starting in October, access between Hiawatha and East 45th Street east of the highway will be closed into December.[1] The Metro Blue Line and bus routes will still serve 46th Street Station, but pedestrian detours will route people around the construction zone.[1]
