Meta Disrupts Iran-Linked AI Network Posing As Americans On Instagram

Meta removed an Iran-based influence network of Facebook and Instagram accounts that used AI-generated memes to pose as American users and target U.S. political audiences.

The company's latest threat report, shared Thursday, August 27, 2026, details four Facebook accounts and 31 Instagram accounts tied to operators in Iran. The accounts shared AI-created content about U.S. politics, including anti-Republican messages and posts on Israel-Palestine and immigration.

Meta found roughly 79,400 Instagram accounts followed at least one of the inauthentic meme pages, and said engagement was "meaningful but limited." Operators posed as U.S.-based activists, students and designers in cities such as Washington, D.C., San Diego and Atlanta, and they tagged or messaged real journalists and politicians to solicit collaborations, though none succeeded.

Meta said the actors routed activity through U.S. and Canadian proxy and hosting services to obscure their Iranian origins and that it shared information about the operation with U.S. law enforcement. The company noted that AI-generated content now appears in virtually every influence network it disrupts and described this campaign's reach as moderate compared with typical state-backed efforts.
