Guinea Landfill Collapse Kills At Least 30, Buries Homes

At least 30 people were killed when the Dar Es Salam landfill in Conakry, Guinea, collapsed after heavy rain on Sunday, August 23, 2026, burying nearby homes.[1]

Officials said six people were seriously injured and multiple homes, including a three-story building, were destroyed as rescue teams worked to find others trapped under the mound.[1] Search-and-rescue operations were underway to locate additional victims trapped beneath the garbage, officials said.[1]

Authorities had planned to close the Dar Es Salam landfill on August 23 because of hazardous conditions after a deadly collapse in 2017.[1] Many nearby residents had not relocated despite the warnings and remained living close enough to be struck when heavy rains destabilized the garbage heap.[1]

Search-and-rescue teams remained at the scene, working to recover survivors and determine a final death toll.[1]
