State Department Warns Americans Of Crime And Kidnapping Risks In Parts Of Ecuador
The State Department on Friday, August 21, 2026 issued a Level 2 "Exercise Increased Caution" advisory for Ecuador, warning Americans about rising violent crime including kidnappings and extortion.[1]
The advisory cites murders, assaults, kidnappings, armed robberies, terrorism and civil unrest, and singles out parts of Guayaquil, Manabí and Santa Elena for particular concern.[1] It says U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents have been victims of kidnapping and extortion in Ecuador.[1]
