Storms Flood New York Freeway As Tornado Damages Dover, Delaware

Severe storms on Thursday, August 20, 2026, flooded part of the Long Island Expressway in Queens and a tornado tore roofs at two hotels in Dover, Delaware.[1]

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency as crews reported people trapped in vehicles and ongoing rescues on Long Island's South Shore.[1] The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado hit Dover shortly after 6 p.m., ripping roofs at two hotels and causing widespread damage but reporting no injuries.[1]

The National Weather Service had earlier issued warnings for waterspouts and tornado-like hazards over water near Long Island before the storms moved east offshore.[1] On Long Island, flooding also damaged a beach club at Atlantic Beach as police and emergency crews continued responding to calls.[1]

The Delaware Electric Cooperative reported more than 1,000 customers without power in the northern part of its service area after the storm.[1] Officials have not reported any injuries and urged residents to avoid flooded roads and follow emergency guidance as crews work to clear damage.[1]
