Brooklyn Park cat-hoarding case leads to home condemnation

A Brooklyn Park home on West Broadway was condemned after officers found nearly 30 cats, including three dead cats, during a July 22 search of the residence.[1]

Sixty-eight-year-old Ann Rickson has been charged with six counts of animal neglect in Hennepin County.[1] Officers seized more than 29 cats and a dog during the search.[1] Three surviving cats later had their eyes surgically removed.[1]

City and police records show investigations at the West Broadway address dating back to 2001, and neighbors had reported odors that reached inside their own homes.[1] Officers entered wearing respirators, found interior surfaces covered in urine and feces, and measured ammonia at 25.4 parts per million.[1]

The condemnation followed the safety assessment and the criminal charges against Rickson, and authorities have said the case will proceed through Hennepin County court.[1]
