Driver fires at Ramsey County deputy during Maplewood stop

A driver fired at a Ramsey County deputy during a traffic stop about 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rice Street and Roselawn Avenue West in Maplewood.[1]

A bullet struck the squad car's hood and windshield but missed the deputy, and the 25-year-old St. Paul suspect was later arrested after fleeing and switching vehicles.[1]

Sheriff's office said the driver of a Buick LeSabre made a U-turn and fired out his driver-side window at point-blank range.[1] The deputy and a K-9 were responding to another call when the stop took place.[1]

After the shooting the suspect ran toward the McDonough Townhomes and later switched into a second vehicle, officials said, and a State Patrol helicopter helped track the car on I-694.[1] Investigators say the 25-year-old suspect threw a handgun from the vehicle during the pursuit and that a Ramsey County deputy and her K-9 recovered the weapon on the 1900 block of Rice Street.[1] The alleged shooter remains in custody at the Ramsey County Jail and had not been formally charged as of Wednesday morning.[1]
