Minneapolis panel renews Reign club liquor license after mass shooting

The Minneapolis City Council's Business, Housing & Zoning Committee unanimously approved renewal of Reign Event Center's liquor license.[1]

Minneapolis police told the committee they found no direct link between the club and the gunfire and have signed off on a revised security plan for the venue.[1]

Nine people between ages 18 and 27 were wounded in a July 19 shooting outside Reign, the second mass shooting on that block since 2020.[1]

City staff told the committee that increased 911 calls to Reign largely involve drugs, disturbances and medical assistance and may partly reflect police urging the owner to call for help.[1]

Officials said they do not want to penalize businesses for using 911 under the city's complaint-driven enforcement system.[1]
