Explosives-Bearing Drone Found At German Cargo Hub Airport, Defused By Police

Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, police found a drone carrying an explosive device near the south runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport and defused it.[1]

Bomb-disposal officers deployed a robot to remove the detonator, and both runways were closed with several flights, including a passenger plane, diverted as a precaution.[1] German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called an explosives-bearing drone at an airport a "new quality of danger," and authorities said they are probing whether a second drone was involved.[1]

A freight plane that diverted to Hannover was later found with slight damage after contact with another object, and investigators are examining whether that contact and the airport find are linked.[1]
