DOJ Loses 20 Suits Seeking States' Unredacted Voter Rolls
The Justice Department has lost federal lawsuits in 20 states seeking unredacted statewide voter registration lists, court rulings and appeals show.[1]
Since 2025 the Justice Department sued 30 states and Washington, D.C., seeking those unredacted lists.[1] The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit upheld a lower court's dismissal of the department's attempt to obtain Michigan's voter rolls.[1] Cases remain pending in Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Nevada, Utah, Vermont, Washington state and Washington, D.C.[1]
The Trump administration's broader election agenda included two executive orders on proof-of-citizenship and on mail voting that were blocked.[1] It also proposed the SAVE America Act to tighten voting rules, part of the same push that produced the Justice Department's records requests.[1]
The wave of dismissals leaves the department without access to unredacted statewide files in most states while a handful of cases continue through the courts.
