ICE Detainee Dies After Medical Emergency At New Jersey's Delaney Hall

Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a 41-year-old ICE detainee, suffered a medical emergency at Delaney Hall in Newark on August 1, 2026, and was later pronounced dead at University Hospital.[1]

ICE said GEO Group staff and on-site medical personnel responded and that 911 was called, and the agency said the official cause of death is pending a formal medical examination.[1] Gov. Mikie Sherrill and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called the death disturbing and said it reinforced their push to close Delaney Hall, which experienced another detainee death on December 12, 2025.[1]

Lopez-Cornejo was first ordered removed on August 25, 2006, and was deported on October 19, 2006. He was re-arrested in Plainfield on June 18, 2026, after illegally re-entering the United States.[1]

Officials have not released a cause of death while the formal medical examination is completed.[1]
